Mode 2 Charger vs Type 2 Charging Cable: What Is the Difference?

A category comparison for reader orientation; check the exact product configuration separately. Editorial concept render. It is not product photography, installation, testing, certification, or compatibility proof.

Which one do you need?

Start with the connection at your charging location, not the kW label.

  • Consider a Type 2 to Type 2 cable when you need to connect a Type 2 AC vehicle inlet to a compatible Type 2 charging-point socket.
  • Consider a portable Mode 2 charger when you need an assembly with an in-cable control and protection device (IC-CPD), and its wall-side connection and electrical supply requirements are confirmed.

These are different charging paths: a Type 2 cable alone does not replace a Mode 2 charger. Check the vehicle, charging connection and exact product configuration together; connector shape alone does not confirm compatibility.

Two charging connections, two different jobs

01: Type 2 charging point → Type 2 cable → vehicle. 02: matching electrical supply → Mode 2 cable with an IC-CPD control unit → vehicle. These symbols explain components, not an installation layout. For this Mode 2 product, confirm the exact 16A single-phase European industrial plug and the matching supply.

Compare the two paths

European configurations at a glance
What to compare Portable Mode 2 charger Type 2 to Type 2 cable
Charging-location connection For the documented European Mode 2 configurations: 16A single-phase European industrial plug. A compatible Type 2 AC charging-point socket.
Vehicle connection Type 2 vehicle connector; check your vehicle's AC inlet. Type 2 vehicle connection; check your vehicle's AC inlet.
Equipment A portable charging assembly that includes an IC-CPD. The connecting cable, not a portable Mode 2 charging assembly.
Documented lengths 5 m, 7.5 m and 10 m. 5 m, 7.5 m and 10 m.

If you are unsure whether a wall-side connection or electrical supply is suitable, have a qualified professional check it before use.

Cable rating is not charging speed

The documented European Type 2 cable configurations are rated 7 kW / 32 A single-phase or 22 kW / 32 A three-phase. These are cable ratings, not a promise of actual charging power.

Actual charging power depends on the vehicle, charging point, electrical supply and selected cable. Check the vehicle's AC charging capability and the charging-point and supply conditions before choosing a rating.

Measure the route you will use

Use your normal parking position. Measure the route the cable would follow from the charging connection to the vehicle inlet, rather than only the straight-line distance. Compare that route with the documented 5 m, 7.5 m and 10 m lengths.

The illustrations explain product categories; they are not a guide to dimensions or proof that a cable will fit your parking setup.

Check the exact model

Use the current product specification and the instructions for your vehicle and charging point. A guide does not confirm compatibility or electrical suitability. If a detail is unknown, record it before choosing.
